Hayden's Analysis

Dart's statistical profile was promising as a rookie. He was 13th in EPA per play and 17th in success rate per play. A lot of that was as a rusher, where he totaled the 2nd-most EPA among QBs, only trailing Josh Allen. He was also 1st in passer rating on plays excluding 1st-read throws, per PFF. Dart's athleticism is very clearly inside the top-10 among starters. He surprisingly split defenders with speed, juked out LBs in space (like All Pro Zach Baun), and then put his head down with his thicker build. The Giants and Dart were way too reliant on his legs as a rookie, but there was a reason for it: Dart is a great athlete. Dart's arm talent is solid, not great. He's better in terms of throw-on-run and accuracy than with raw power. He was 9th in PFF's Big Time Throw Rate, surrounded by Sam Darnold, Caleb Williams, Josh Allen, and Bo Nix. A lot of these moments were out of structure, where his run-away speed and touch were on display. Meanwhile, Dart's arm strength is at best average, if not teetering towards below average among NFL starters. He loses some juice on post routes and sideline go balls. There was a really under-thrown pass in the Broncos game, but it popped up 1-3 times per start. Because he's already so well built, I don't think Dart's arm strength will get much better. The way it would is if he begins playing more in rhythm so his cleats can be in the dirt more than they were as a rookie. Dart's very clear weakness is playing on time. He was too reactionary and not anticipatory. This isn't a surprise given the Lane Kiffin college offense he came from, but it's the reality. There were too many half-field completions and too many mis-identified in-cuts on film. There was a brutal missed dig vs. the Saints that led to a fumble, and then another against the Commanders which he throw a full hitch too late, leading to an INT. Dart's feet are a little too loose, so the entire concept and feet need to be tailored together more moving forward. If it doesn't his ceiling is capped. Two wild splits emerged for these reasons: red zone and against two-high shells. In both situations, Dart's numbers are brutal. He played out of structure too often in them, and the best QBs can play extremely quick to beat the coverage underneath in ways Dart did not showcase. In the red zone, he had a fumble out of structure, an INT in the scramble drill, and then was a hair late for another INT. He also didn't have a 1-on-1 winner in the pass game, paired with a mediocre OL. As a reminder, Dart did not play with Malik Nabers last season. It's fair to say TE Theo Johnson and WR Darius Slayton owe Dart about 5 TDs. Getting Nabers, TE Isiah Likely, and WR Darnell Mooney should be helpful. Dart is on the Russell Wilson, Brock Purdy, Jalen Hurts, and Bo Nix spectrum. He should get better just by playing more, and his physical traits are above average. There is a pathway to fringe top-12 status long term for the Giants, and he was already almost there in fantasy football last year, as the QB14 on a per-game basis.
