Hunter's upside is far greater than the part-time WRs he's priced next to
Hunter had a very sloppy rookie season on offense. There were very clear playbook concerns on top of lining up offsides on a long BTJ TD, coming out of breaks without pace, and fumbling an underneath catch via a Fred Warner punch out. He also got tossed around as a blocker at times, so it's a good sign that he added some weight in the offseason. His lack of power caught up to him at times. Only mustering up 1.26 yards per route and a 19% targets per route share in a part-time role was disappointing for how much the Jaguars hyped him up. Purely on advanced stats, Hunter is just okay. That said, Hunter absolutely had flashes of high-end WR play on tape, especially when the Jaguars allowed him to operate down the field. They played him in the slot on 65% of his offensive snaps, and he only played in 3- or 4-WR snaps. It was a streamlined role that led to plenty of option, hitch, quick out, or flat routes. He was able to generate some broken tackles on them, but his handful of great reps came on posts and crossers where he was able to show off his elite jumping and contorting ability. Hunter did not get many reps against press man coverage, so it's hard to get a firm grasp of how good he is at "real" receiver stuff, but the traits are undoubtably there. Unfortunately, Hunter's CB tape showed a lot of high-end potential with fewer mistakes. It'd be amazing if he can play both positions full time, but that seems somewhat unrealistic. Based on the depth chart, Hunter is more needed at CB than WR after watching Parker Washington break out, Jakobi Meyers jumpstarting the offense via trade, and then having Brian Thomas Jr. as the vertical X. The baseline projection is Hunter will play in 3-WR sets again but not all of them, while playing near full-time snaps at CB. He'll have to be an excellent WR to overcome 20-30 routes per game, but Hunter has a pathway at a steep drop in Underdog ADP (WR57). He's already priced next to part-time players, so I'm in at cost unless this PCL tear lingers further into camp than expected. He's running as of late May.
