Shough is on path to average NFL starter with Tannehill similarities
Shough had a very competent rookie season. It came as a 26-year-old, sure. But he's well on his way to becoming an average NFL starter and someone who is a bargain on a 2nd-round rookie contract. Shough was the leader in yards per attempt on plays excluding throws to his first read, per PFF. All QBs, not just rookies. That is extremely impressive!!! A lot of that credit is because he can read the field and play within the pocket. Especially by rookie standards, Shough can throw the ball on time and over the middle. He stood tall in the pocket, scanned zone defenses, and threw with touch and passable accuracy within 5-19 yards. That's a valuable baseline. Shough's arm talent is rock solid. He can take some RPMs off it to layer throws, and he can throw on the run to both sides. The play-action boot is in his bag. He can also drop a 15-yard sideline shot with the best of them, but he is more average in terms of pinpoint accuracy on crossing patterns. Some explosives were left on the field by placing the ball on the back shoulder on these digs. That said, a rookie throwing digs is rare, so I don't want to nitpick. Shough's accuracy on downfield passes was more scattered, and he doesn't have overwhelming power for someone as big as he is. He's definitely capable of chunking the ball downfield in terms of strength, but it did not come together as a rookie. His catchable ball rate on 20+ air yard passes was near the bottom. Shough is a fine athlete, who can surprise. He hit the Bucs twice for explosives on the ground, showcasing straight-line speed with some long strides. He is not a creative runner and will not be a manufactured carry QB too often, but Shough easily clears the Jared Goff zone. In many ways, Shough is Ryan Tannehill. Shough will progress through the concept so quickly that he'll get all the way to the check down within mere seconds. Pro and con. He wasn't fooled too often by rookie standards and he plays a conservative brand of ball. He wants to push the ball over the middle and to the intermediate part of the field initially, then is satisfied with hitting the checkdown early. That keeps his floor in good shape. Shough's two problems are play under pressure and lack of explosives. His internal clock is pretty quick, and his feet can feel antsy the second the pocket isn't ideal. His pressure-to-sack ratio was the 2nd-worst last year, which is something that crept up in college, too. Most of his bad decisions and INTs fell into the bucket of playing too quick, rather than being fooled. The Saints downfield came was mid, but that should improve with the OL in good shape and with new weapons in competent veteran LG David Edwards, Travis Etienne, 1st-round WR Jordyn Tyson, and speedy 3rd-round TE Oscar Delp. It's easy to see Kellen Moore feeling more confident this time around, and he already called the fastest-paced offense in 2025. The Saints seem underrated offensively. Shough's odds of finishing out his rookie contract as a starter seem high, and his paths to being the 10th best QB in the NFL seem to be undersold. Discount Trevor Lawrence, Daniel Jones, and Ryan Tannehill are all fair comparisons. Shough should beat his QB26 ranking from his rookie season quite comfortably, but only 20 rush yards per games will prevent him from being a low-end QB1 in most outcomes. He's a mid-range QB2 with the Saints 22nd in projected points. Once again, that feels light.
